Victoria has continued to experience strong growth in visitors in the year to June 30, the latest results of the National Visitor Survey has revealed, with evidence that marketing campaigns promoting the Goulburn River Valley region are having a positive effect.

Goulburn River Valley Tourism welcomes the latest results, which showed very encouraging trends such as significant growth in total visitation up by 18.2% to 3.1 million visitors, and total visitor spend of $455 million an increase of 19.3%, all ahead of the national average.

Key markets have performed strongly with domestic daytrippers to the region increasing by 11.3% compared the same period last year, increasing to 2.1 million visitors. Over 2 million Australian visitors stayed overnight in the region, an increase of 30.5%, and international visitation grew by a further 57.4%. Overnight domestic visitation has contributed over $231 million to the regional economy, up from $208 million in the last period.

Goulburn River Valley Tourism Executive Officer Leanne Hulm said the growth in visitation, visitor night and expenditure is proof that the Heart of Victoria is becoming a destination of choice.

“With a third of visitors to region coming to spend time with friends and relatives everyone should be aware of the fantastic local destinations and hidden treasures we have on off in the Heart of Victoria” she said.

“The Discover the Heart of Victoria Planner is available at all Visitor Information Centres across the region and is a wonderful resource for discovering everything in your backyard.”

Overnight expenditure, visitation and night in the region were driven largely by an increase in intrastate visitors (up by 45%)
